SPECIAL NOTICE FROM FORD CIVIL CONTRACTING, ON BEHALF OF THE NSW GOVERNMENT, TRANSPORT DEPT
New intersection on Broadway between Abercrombie and Balfour Streets, Ultimo/Chippendale – commencing Monday 14 November 2011
Central Park is a new residential and commercial precinct being developed on the former Kent Brewery site in Chippendale. The new six hectare precinct will provide dwellings for approximately 2500 residents, workspace for over 5400 workers and over 1200 construction jobs during development. This approved development precinct is being privately developed by Frasers Property.
As a result of the development, road and intersection upgrades will soon be required. This road upgrade work will be carried out by Ford Civil Contracting.
Background
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) has been working with Frasers Broadway and Ford Civil Contracting regarding access to this approved development.
We need to provide access to the new precinct while minimising traffic delays on Broadway and avoiding extra traffic on surrounding residential streets. After detailed traffic investigations, two options were considered feasible:
1. Converting one existing lane on Broadway into a new right turn lane into the new precinct.
2. Maintaining all of the current lanes on Broadway, and creating a new lane by narrowing the footpath on the northern side of Broadway (near the University of Technology Sydney).
Option one is not feasible due to the impact on traffic flow of losing one Broadway lane.
Option two was chosen because it would help to maintain traffic flow on Broadway, and also help to keep further traffic off surrounding residential streets.
What does the upgrade involve?
The road and intersection upgrade will involve:
• Widening the northern side of Broadway (between Abercrombie and Balfour streets) to create a new right turn lane into Balfour Street (citybound). This will be done by narrowing the footpath on the northern side of Broadway from 4.5 metres to approximately 3.6 metres.
• The footpath narrowing will require six trees to be removed. The University of Technology Sydney will be replanting street trees before the footpath work is completed. (Correction: planting of new street trees will be undertaken by the developers of Central Park.)
• Moving the existing median to make way for the new right turn lane.
• The new right turn lane into Balfour Street also allows the creation of a new right turn lane into Wattle Street from Broadway (westbound).
• Jones Street will be permanently closed at Broadway, meaning traffic will no longer be able to pass between Jones Street and Broadway. The current footpath will be extended across the former intersection.
• The traffic signals currently at Jones Street will be removed, and new traffic signals will be installed at the new Balfour Street intersection.
When is this upgrade happening?
Work is scheduled to commence on Monday 14 November 2011 and will take approximately four months to complete, weather permitting.
To minimise traffic disruptions, work will usually be undertaken at night. The section of road near the work area will be partially closed Sunday to Thursday from 9pm to 5am. Some day work will also be required. This work will happen Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm.
What are the upgrade impacts?
There will be noise associated with this work. There will also be other impacts such as lane closures, minor parking restrictions, alternate pedestrian access and relocating one bus stop.
During this work motorists are asked to follow the signs, including reduced speed limits, and to follow the direction of traffic controllers. Delays are expected due to the lane closures.
Ford Civil Contracting is aware of the impact of this work, and every effort will be made to minimise the inconvenience to motorists, residents, businesses and pedestrians. Ford Civil Contracting will ensure that regular update information is made available to residents and businesses throughout the project.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation while this upgrade is being carried out.
