The scale and significance of the old Kent Brewery site requires sensitivity to both the future of Sydney and the character of the past. The first of many cultural projects to be undertaken at this site was commissioned in late 2007 when Frasers invited acclaimed architectural photographer, Martin van der Wal, to create a visual history of the site, its historic buildings and industrial ephemera.
Frasers asked for ‘a visual poem’ of the site, giving Martin van der Wal free access to the entire 5.8 hectare site, and Martin’s final collection of over 50 images has delivered that and much more. This captivating and evocative collection captures the quiet pause between the end of the brewing era and the commencement of building works. Martin’s moody, thought-provoking and richly textured photographs will be displayed in future buildings and be a resource for artists and historians as Frasers’ extensive cultural and public arts programme takes shape.
