On February 8, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally joined NSW Planning Minister Tony Kelly and Frasers Property's Dr Stanley Quek to announce the granting of approval to commence construction of the public park and road infrastructure for Central Park.
Work on the park, roads, footpaths and traffic signals has now commenced, while work is already underway on the sales pavilion and temporary retail shops along Broadway. The 6500sqm public park will feature large expanses of lawn, natural landscaping, a significant water feature, public art and seating, with cycleways and a large pedestrian promenade providing future connectivity from Chippendale to Broadway and Central. The park will be completed in 12 months and will then be handed to the City of Sydney for public access while work on the rest of Central Park continues.
NSW Planning Minister Tony Kelly said "This approval means that the people of Sydney are one step closer to enjoying what will be a magnificent new public space. This park will be a great asset to the City of Sydney and represents the first time the space will be open to the public in over 150 years."
