Chippendale residents can now experience a small sample of the future green space at the heart of Central Park, with the opening of Balfour Street Park. This 400sqm pocket park, at the corner of Balfour Street and O'Connor Streets, Chippendale, is now completed and was formally opened by the Lord Mayor on 19 June. Balfour Street Park will be a local pedestrian gateway to Central Park once the main park is completed around March 2011.
Designed by the City of Sydney and delivered by Frasers Property, the park features design elements based on materials found in Chippendale. Paved with sandstone, recycled bricks and glass, it's in keeping with existing, historic buildings, including the brewery. The park's innovative water feature captures and treats stormwater, while lights in the shape of reeds illuminate the water feature at night.
